Mayor of Derry and Strabane, Ruairí McHugh has launched a campaign for communities, schools and businesses to run fundraisers for UNICEF’s Gaza Appeal for Children in Crisis.
The initiative (November 17 to 23) will tie in with World Children’s Day on November 20, to mark the council’s recent recognition as a UNICEF Child Friendly City and Community — the first in Northern Ireland and the second in the UK.
The mayor said the humanitarian situation facing children in Gaza was “heartbreaking” and called on residents to “channel community spirit into practical action”.
Groups were urged to organise activities, from bake sales to sponsored challenges and non-uniform days.
Mayor McHugh said: “As a Child Friendly City, we have a moral obligation to act. World Children’s Day reminds us of the rights of every child, and right now, the children of Gaza are in desperate need of survival, protection, and support.”
Organisers are asked to register their events with the Mayor’s Office so they can be promoted on council channels.
Official street collections are planned in Derry and Strabane on Thursday, November 20.
