Derry City and Strabane District Council has announced plans for multiple masterclasses and workshop hubs to run during next week’s Derry Jazz Festival.
The workshops, by artists Hannes Riepler, Sylvie Noble & Camille Rose, and Riely Stone-Lonergran, will run at venues across the city to celebrate the carnival’s 25th anniversary.
The programme begins with a jazz guitar masterclass by Hannes Riepler on Friday, May 1. Participants will explore improvisation, repertoire and develop a deeper connection with the instrument. On Saturday, May 2, vocalists Sylvie Noble and Camille Rose will host a vocal masterclass, offering the chance to learn new techniques and enjoy live performances.
The final masterclass will take place on Sunday, May 3 when saxophonist Riley Stone-Lonergan and guitarist, Phil Robson take over. The highly acclaimed duo will present an engaging introduction to improvising in a group setting, creating collaboratively and navigating creative challenges.
Bennigans bar, at John Street, is hosting an educational even for the festival for the first time. A long-time performance venue, Bennigans is a known centre for live music in the city. The masterclasses will be the first time the bar’s newly renovated state of the art studio space will be officially used.
Bennigans’ John Leighton said everyone was welcome to attend to the masterclass sessions within their new space. He said it would open up after the festival as a rehearsal space, recording and content creation.
“This year is particularly special for us. While Bennigans has proudly hosted live music as part of the festival throughout the years, this is the first time we’ve introduced an educational element to our programme.
“We’re also thrilled to be hosting the masterclasses in our newly renovated studio space, it’s the first time it will be used, and we’re excited for people to experience it,” Mr. Leighton said.
The masterclasses are free to attend, although tickets are essential for access. Tickets are available at www.cityofderryjazzfestival.com/tickets.
The Derry Jazz Festival runs from Friday, April 29 to Monday, May 4.
