WIthin the Derry city and Strabane District Council area’s, work has recently commenced, on a key rural village regeneration programme, designed to improve the visual appearances of targeted village and town centres. The COVID recovery small settlements programme is supporting the scheme. It is a collaboration between the Department for Communities,, Department of Agriculture, DAERA (Department of agricultural, Environmental and Rural Affairs. The main focus is the painting of the facades of commercial properties in eight village and town centre settlements.
The programme aims to support a range of regeneration and active travel interventions targeting small settlements, with a population of less than 5,000 people that will attract investors and visitors.
The first phase of the painting facade scheme has already commenced in Claudy and Castlederg, with the remainder of the works to be completed in the next six months.
£1 million pounds have been secured for the facade painting scheme, with the remaining budget committed to green infrastructure / active travel projects in Claudy, Newtonstewart and Park. It has been welcomed by Mayor Patricia Logue who said he was delighted for work to begin on his important regeneration project. The painting works will be delivered over two separate contracts for Dearg District Electoral area (Castlederg, Newtonstewart and Sion Mills), and the Sperrin / Faughan District Electoral area (Ballymagorry, Claudy, Donemana, Eglinton, Plumbridge).
“This project represents a key collaborative rural regeneration initiative between council and the respective central government departments,” said Mayor Patricia Logue.
