Mayor of Derry City and Strabane District Council, Ruairí McHugh, has pledged a “fantastic day out for all the family” at this year’s St Patricks day Carnival.

Derry and Strabane council has unveiled a programme full of music dance, food and folklore for the St. Patricks Day Spring Carnival celebrations. This year’s programme will celebrate the theme of “what we nurture will flourish and what we protect will endure”.

The centrepiece of the celebration is the North West Carnival Initiative’s acclaimed Spring Carnival Parade. This will make its way through the city from 3pm. The parade will feature energetic performances from local dance groups, sports clubs and community organisations.

Mr McHugh launched the programme this week at Guildhall Square. He said that everyone should get involved with the day’s events.

“It’s always a fantastic day out for all the family, with lots of activity and entertainment planned I would encourage everyone to access the programme now and get involved,” he said.

The St Patricks Day parade has always been a big event in Derry and it about to get even bigger according to festival and events manager, Jacqueline Whoriskey.

“In recent years, the city’s celebrations have attracted more than 30,000 spectators and increasing numbers of visitors are choosing our Council area as their destination to celebrate St Patrick’s Day,” she said.
