Young environmentalists from North West Regional College in Derry visited the shores of Lough Neagh – Ireland’s largest lake – to learn new methods of creative campaigning.
Huge bacterial blooms, known as blue-green algae, have periodically coated Lough Neagh’s surface since 2023.
Toxins produced during these blooms may potentially be harmful to public health, according to the Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs.
Algal blooms may occur throughout the year when suitable weather conditions combine with excessive nutrients from sources such as agriculture or waste water.
Belfast artist and musician, Patrick McGuire, came to discuss how incorporating creativity and fun may help young adults engage with ecological education. His latest example was his handcrafted boardgame, ‘Cross the Lough’.
