Work on Derry’s new Mullenan cemetery is progressing, as the existing City Cemetery is expected to reach capacity by spring 2026.

Officials from Derry & Strabane Council’s Environment and Regeneration team have told members that the current City Cemetery on Lone Moor Road is expected to be full by Spring 2026.

Work on the municipal cemetery, on the outskirts of the city at Mullenan Road, began in March and is expected to be “substantially advanced” by the end of this year, with final completion scheduled for early to mid-2026.

The council said that the cemetery team was working to bring the first plots at the Mullenan site – those nearest the Mullenan Road entrance – into use before the overall project was finished.

Cemetery staff said they were liaising with funeral directors so families could choose to use the new cemetery as soon as possible. The new site will provide around 3,500 burial plots, alongside a memorial garden, public toilets, storage buildings and parking.

SDLP councillor, Declan Norris, chair of the council’s Environment and Regeneration Committee, said the project was a significant investment in essential infrastructure.

“With capacity at the existing City Cemetery projected to run out in Spring 2026, the new Mullenan facility is vital, as it will provide a modern, peaceful and attractive burial space with approximately 3,500 plots, ensuring our community’s needs are met for up to 20 years,” Mr Norris said.

As well as a main entrance from Mullenan Road, plans include a pedestrian and cycle link to Ballougry Road, with the long-term aim of connecting on to an existing greenway route known as “The Line”, subject to land acquisition.
