Agricultural authorities north and south of the border have placed restrictions on the poultry industry following six confirmed outbreaks of avian flu.
The Republic’s Minister for Agriculture, Food and the Marine, Martin Heydon, said action was necessary to reduce the threat to the poultry industry. Mr Heydon said it was important to work together with Northern Ireland’s Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs (DAERA) to stop the spread of the illness.
“There has been strong and ongoing cooperation between my Department and The Department of Agriculture, Environment and Rural Affairs in Northern Ireland on this issue,” Mr Heydon said.
DAERA minister, Andrew Muir said Northern Ireland relied heavily on the agri-food industry as a source of employment.
Mr Muir said: “Poultry and egg production contributes significantly to the economy, valued at over £600 million, and it is vital that we do all we can to support industry efforts to keep HPAI out.”
He welcomed the cross-border cooperation to deal with the issue.
Chief Veterinary Officer for Northern Ireland, Brian Dooher said avian influenza could have a significant and devastating impact on the poultry industry, international trade and the wider economy.”
Anyone who suspected an animal was affected in the Republic has been urged to report the case to their Regional Veterinary Office. In Northern Ireland, cases should be reported to the DAERA helpline on 0300 200 7840.
