As the GAA celebrates 140 years, Derrys Hurling and Camogie group Na Magha have paid tribute to the organisation.

A hotel in County Tipperary in 1884 was the scene of a gathering that imagined and constructed one of Ireland’s sporting identities.  Today millions of people in Ireland and across the globe are a part of what has become the heart of sport Ireland.

The Gaelic Athletic Association – known widely as the GAA, has become a cultural organisation.  The sports played within it are Gaelic Football, Rounders, Gaelic handball, Hurling and a special emphasis on the girls Camogie.  the GAA proudly promotes equality, diversity and inclusion for all their players.

GAA Director General Tom Ryan stated: “It is remarkable the organisation is of that standing and that durable.  The founders had great foresight to come together and codify the games in a world that was so different to what we now know.”

On Nov 1 1884 the Hayle Hotel in Thurles was the place to realise a sporting dream that became reality.

Uachtarán (President) Jarlath Burns said :”On this day, we give thanks to all of those that make us what we are today.

“He did not know it then, but the dream unleashed in his hotel room in 1884 by Cusack, Davin and his colleagues, would go on to inspire millions, and engulf the nation.

“Our glorious games, full of sublime skills and native to our country would be revived, rescued and rised to a position of unprecedented popularity in Irish life.

“We give thanks for our games, our culture and our people, we are the GAA – GRMA.”

Derry’s only Hurling and Camogie club, Na Magha CLG located at Parc Na Magha – paid tribute to the GAA and thanked everyone who has supported the club through the years.

The club stated: “Thanks to those who contributed to Na Magha in any way.

“We are the GAA 1881 – 2024 – where we belong.”

The infographic shows how the GAA has grown since its development.  These statistics reflect the number of clubs per province worldwide of GAA clubs in 2024.
