Gary Numan brought his Telekon 45th anniversary concert to the 3Olympia in Dublin, with the support of his daughter, Raven Numan.
The music of Raven Numan provided a perfect appetiser for the crowd who were anxiously awaiting Gary Numan toperform. Her music brought a mix of her father’s classic style and goth music forming a perfect concoction. Ger vocals and stage presence showed she was the perfect pick to support her father. While there were some technical mishaps at the start they were quickly fixed as the show went on.
Gary took the stage shortly after his daughter had finished her set and the crowd immediately showed their dedication to a pioneer of the new wave genre with several chants throughout the night shouting one thing “Numan”.
While promoting of his album “Telekon”, it was not a retreading of an album but an evolution of the album. After 45 years Numan showed he has shed the persona of the past that he was no longer an “android” but that he was a man who has had decades to reflect upon the album.
With the stage set, the music kept its power. Song after song coursed through the 3Olympia with such precision it could’ve been mistaken for a pre-recorded performance. The visuals of the night were not only being there to support the music but took on a life of their own, with such movement that not even pictures could do it justice.
The crowd showed true adoration for the man who played more than a vital part in shaping the music tastes of not only the older crowd but the younger crowd too. The crowd shaped an important part of the beauty of the night.
As he performed every song from Telekon, emotions ran higher and the performance showed true beauty. Even after the pain he faced earlier in the month, Numan kept his unwavering art true to himself. After a beautiful rendition of his song ‘Please Push No More’, he had to take a moment to grieve his brother, showing a true human moment between the crowd and the singer himself.
He spoke on his love of his brother and how the concert had evolved into more than just a celebration of his sophomore album into a celebration and tribute to his brother, John Numan who tragically passed due to heart problems shortly after meeting his brother who was in Leeds to perform.
Numan had commented on the tragedy on his Instagram priorstating “He was only 15 when I made it. So, this tour is no longer a celebration of an album, it’s a tribute to John, my brother, the best brother a man could ever have.”
After the touching moment, he finished performing the entirety of Telekon with the same energy he kept throughout the night. Afterwards he then brought an encore consisting of Tubeway Army songs that brought cheers across the venue, before finishing with the timeless Down in the Park.
