NWRC student Callum McGuigan has been named Student Journalist of the Year at the CIPR Northern Ireland Media Awards.

Callum, who is undertaking the part-time L5 NCTJ Diploma in Journalism is working for the Ulster Herald in his native Omagh alongside his studies.

On winning the award Callum said

“Words just can’t describe the immensity of being awarded student journalist of the year at the NI Media Awards. From starting in NWRC three years ago on the HND Journalism before moving on to the NCTJ, I never imagined that I would be an award winning journalist before I even finished my studies. It is a great feeling to be recognised for my devotion over the past few years and furthermore it excites me for what the future holds.
“I’d like to thank my lecturers Seamus McKinney, Jonathan Millar and Suzanne Rodgers who saw my potential during my studies and pushed me towards achieving my maximum potential, not just in academic studies but in the real journalistic world. This award recognises not just me and my work, but it symbolises all students who are working hard through their early career in a rapidly changing and challenging environment.”
“With this award under my belt, I am even more driven to completing my NCTJ and graduating from the course. I hope now that once I finish, I will be ready to step into full time work in the journalism industry, with heightened anticipation for bigger and better opportunities.”

Editor of the Ulster Herald Nigel McDonagh said “I’m delighted for Callum, who has shown tremendous initiative and enthusiasm since joining our team. He fully deserves his Student Journalist of the Year award and is set for a great career in the media industry.”
