The Mayor of Derry is to meet with the BBC Director General to discuss cuts to Radio Foyle, in a bid to save jobs and protect the service. Councillor Sandra Duffy will travel to London to meet BBC chief Tim Davie as well as BBC Director of Nations Rhodri Talfan Davies on Wednesday.

“I will be sharing with the BBC chiefs the extent of public opposition here in Derry and across the North West to these proposed cuts,” said Cllr Duffy. “I look forward to the meeting and welcome the opportunity to present out case.”

It had previously been hoped that the BBC bosses would travel to Derry for a public meeting, so they could see the level of public support there is for the Save the Radio Foyle campaign. Cllr Duffy  remains hopeful that public consultation will still take place, allowing the public to have a say in any cuts.

She said she will be calling on them to immediately reconsider their current plans.

“I will be doing all I can to put pressure on the BBC.”

Mayor Duffy also encouraged the public to sign the petition to save Radio Foyle in person at the Guildhall or online at https://www.megaphone.org.uk/petitions/save-bbc-radio-foyle-oppose-cuts-to-jobs-and-programmes?share=d23feaf6-bc89-45a9-ba01-3b64fd7115a2
