A rural Donegal town has been shortlisted for a prestigious heritage award.
Ramelton, which lies just eight miles north of Letterkenny is one of only three areas from Ireland and Great Britain selected for the Sustainable Heritage Award of the Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB).
The announcement was made by at a recent reception in London by Kevin Mc Cloud, presenter of Channel 4’s Grand Designs. He said he hopes to visit the county next year to discover more about Ramelton’s heritage-led conservation work.
The Ramelton Historic Towns Initiative has already won the Urban Design Award and was shortlisted for two further national awards recently.
In all 14 historic buildings in Ramelton benefit from the Historic Towns Initiative, which is a collaboration between Donegal County Council, Ramelton Georgian Society, Dedalus Architecture and local property owners. All are included on the National Inventory of Architectural Heritage or have Protected Structures status.
Said Joseph Gallagher, County Donegal Heritage Officer: “Of the over 70 heritage-led projects from across Britain and Ireland. It’s a great accolade to be among the final three projects shortlisted for the award.”
Conversion work carried out in Ramelton’s historic streetscape included roof and chimney repairs, installation of cast-iron rainwater goods, replacing timber sash windows and doors, as well as the repair and replacement of historic shopfronts. Traditional materials were used and all works was informed by best conservation practice and historical evidence.
Lessons learned from previous Historic Towns Initiative projects in Letterkenny and Ramelton are currently being applied to work on historic buildings and streetscapes in Ballyshannon.
SPAB was founded by the renowned architect and designer William Morris in 1877.
