Derry City and Strabane District Council is preparing to celebrate the silver jubilee of Derry’s hugely successful jazz festival.

Running from April 29 to May 4 throughout the city, the programme will feature a headline performance at the Millennium Forum from iconic jazz singer Curtis Stigers on its opening day. This will be  followed by Donegal blues and country singer Muireann Bradley at the Guildhall on April 30 and tenor saxophonist Leo Richardson on Sunday, May 3 at The Playhouse.

The festival will maintain its emphasis on developing and nurturing local talent at the festival whilst continuing to welcome international talent.

Dedicated jazz hubs will be set up at The Playhouse, St Columb’s Hall and Bennigans at John St as well as outside stages at the Craft Village and Guildhall Square.

There will be two dance workshops in St Columbs Hall Saturday, May 2 and Sunday, May 3 by Strictly Come Dancing choreographer Jenny Thomas. These are intended for newcomers and veterans alike. Also on May 2, the DLD Second Line Parade will also take place as part of the festival.

Derry City and Strabane District mayor Ruiari McHugh said the “continued growth” of the festival was “a testament to the vision, dedication and creativity of everyone involved”.

He said: “I look forward to welcoming audiences to what promises to be a spectacular celebration of music this April and May.”

“Each year we strive to build on the success of previous festivals, and we are incredibly proud of how the event has grown into one of the largest festivals of its kind, said Aisling McCallion, festival and events coordinator for Derry City and Strabane District Council.

“Our schools’ programme remains a key focus, giving young and up-and-coming musicians the chance to develop their skills and perform in a professional setting, establishing a lasting legacy for the festival. While our wider programme continues to provide a valuable platform for both local and visiting performers. We are so excited to unveil this year’s line-up and invite everyone to join us in celebrating this milestone anniversary.”
