The Irish diaspora will be honoured at the annual Tip O’Neill Awards ceremony in the Inishowen Gateway Hotel on Friday, October 17.

The awards commemorate Tip O’Neill, former Speaker of the US House of Representatives, whose grandparents hailed from Donegal. Cathaoirleach Cllr Paul Canning of Donegal County Council will present the awards to individuals who have demonstrated exceptional achievement, while maintaining strong links with Ireland.

Speaking ahead of the ceremony, Cllr Canning said:

“This year’s awardees reflect the very best of what it means to be Irish. Whether through civic leadership, cultural pride, or international achievement, each of them carries our country’s spirit with pride and purpose.”

This year’s recipients of the Tip O’Neill awards are Vincent Keaveny, Danny Hutton, along with Eileen and Seán Donaghey.

Alderman Keaveny made history as the first Irishman to serve as Lord Mayor of London, holding the office in 2021. He spoke of the importance of the link between the Irish diaspora and their homeland:

“I am delighted to receive the Tip O’Neill Irish Diaspora Award this year.  The Award connects a part of the world that is very important to me and my family with the work I have been doing in London in recent years as a member of the diaspora community.  It is wonderful to be back in Donegal to receive this special recognition.”

Danny Hutton, a Donegal native, is best known as a founding member and lead vocalist of the band Three Dog Night.  Speaking to Donegal County Council, he said:

“Having been born in County Donegal I have always cherished my Irish heritage and believe that the inherent Irish traits of resilience, storytelling, and creativity have in part driven my success as a musician, performer and record producer.”

Eileen and Seán Donaghey are originally from Buncrana, Co Donegal, but have operated an award-winning restaurant in Sydney for the past 34 years. In that time, they have worked to promote Irish culture abroad, and have raised hundreds of thousands of dollars for charitable causes in Ireland and Australia.

Tickets for the 2025 Tip O’Neill Awards are €40 and are on sale now.
