Donegal migrant workers’ historical contributions to Scotland are being celebrated at an exhibition as part of Glasgow’s 850th anniversary events.
‘Working Over By: Donegal Emigrant Working Lives in Scotland 1940-1990’ was opened to the public at the Glasgow City Archives recently. The travelling exhibition highlights the occupations and working conditions of Donegal people in Scotland over the twentieth century through personal accounts and photographs.
The showcase is funded by Donegal County Council and The Heritage Council as part of the County Donegal Heritage Plan.
Joseph Gallagher, County Donegal Heritage Officer, said there were few families in Donegal who were not affected by emigration.
Mr Gallagher said: “With the passage of time, the opportunities to record first-hand accounts of the experiences of Donegal people working in Scotland are disappearing.
“This travelling exhibition captures some of the images and accounts associated with this important chapter in County Donegal’s story.”
The exhibition will run in the Glasgow City Archives until January 2026, before travelling to other parts of Scotland next year.
