Donegal Tourism and Donegal County Council have hailed the success of their “Lunchtime Wheelers” cycle event, held as a highlight of National Bike Week 2025. The initiative, supported by the Sustainable Biking Tourism (SUB) project, brought local authority staff out on two wheels for a health-focused and environmentally friendly midday ride.

The event, which featured a scenic 6km route around Donegal Town, offered participants a chance to experience the mental and physical benefits of cycling while encouraging more sustainable travel habits across the county.

“We were thrilled with the turnout and enthusiasm for our ‘Lunchtime Wheelers’ event,” said Mary Daly, SUB Project Manager with Donegal Tourism. “Bike Week is a fantastic platform to highlight the joy and practicality of cycling, and this event truly embodied that spirit. It’s about encouraging people to incorporate more active travel into their daily routines.”

Daly emphasized the broader goals of the initiative: “Donegal County Council is committed to fostering healthier communities and promoting environmentally friendly modes of transport. With the support of the SUB project, the event showcased just how easy and enjoyable it can be to choose cycling.”

Participants were treated to a healthy lunch, a relaxed group cycle, and informative sessions on cycling safety and fitness. The event also featured information about the Cycle to Work Scheme and provided opportunities to test electric bikes—helping make cycling more accessible to a wider audience.

The initiative aligns with the SUB project’s mission to enhance sustainable tourism across Donegal by promoting green mobility and wellness.
