Incidences of domestic violence typically rise due to increased family pressures at Christmas but help is available. Relate NI is a dedicated organisation providing relationship support and counselling services in Northern Ireland.
By offering personalized guidance tailored to the unique needs of individuals, couples, and families, they aim to help people improve and sustain healthy relationships.
Their inclusive approach supports individuals from various backgrounds, orientations, and identities, emphasizing their commitment to diversity and accessibility.
Ashling Pearson, a counsellor with Relate NI stresses the importance of raising awareness and educating communities about the prevalence and impact of domestic violence and gender-based abuse.
She said “It takes a few counselling sessions, it can be hard when you’re reliving what’s happened, but sometimes you must do that, to sort of get to a place where you can start to heal.
She said that “Relate NI are strong advocates of talking therapies, and we’ve got counsellors in our Relate NI team that work with children specifically, and then we’ve got counsellors in the team that work with adults.
“We also have counsellors in the team that work with couples, so it’s quite vast in terms of what we can do”. The service users are offered 12 sessions.”
She explained that domestic violence and intimate partner violence has a vast impact on the victim’s mental health, victims have described having feelings of anxiety and depression and significate distress and suicidal ideation.

“Both charities are operating separately for now. The merger provides a seamless service between counselling & family mediation, ensuring the right relationship support service is available to people at the right time.”
