NWRC is providing courses to support people to re-engage with skills and education in order to access employment.

The Step up programme is diverse in the courses that are provided.  Head of the Step- up programme Catriona Sweeney explained that:

“There are four different strands:

1. College Connect Plus  for ages 16 to 24 who are economically inactive

2. College Connect 24 plus for over 24’s

3. Women Returners programme for women over 18, economically inactive or on zero hour contract, or less than 16 hours

4. The Disability Programme for anyone who is neurodivergent, has a statement of educational needs, or if a person has severe anxiety and is over 16 plus

Programmes run a minimum of 12 weeks.

Catriona outlined what is involved within the courses and the opportunities that they present.

“College Connect Plus are vocational skills getting people back into education and employment. Core skills customer service / IT skills. Generic enough to transcend to different areas.  We run courses at different levels such as the Pre- literacy for people who can’t read or write, make up and nails for females that could lead to a career pathway.”

The programmes run at different times throughout the year Catriona stated

“From April 1 there are part time, 12-week programmes all year. They run from April to the end of March 2025.”

Catriona explained why the courses have been introduced and how they benefit people:

“It was found there was a need from several studies done over years on the economically inactive. European social fund for Level One Programmes meant a person could do many courses but they were not progressing or going into employment. This kind of mentoring support can help progress and get the student to move on.”
