A nationwide scheme which has volunteers carry out minor repairs and DIY work for elderly people has been extended to Donegal.
Age Action Care is extending its Care and Repair scheme to an area from Letterkenny to Lifford taking in Ballybofey, Stranorlar, Drumkeen, Raphoe and Convoy.
The scheme puts people over the age of 18, but not students, in touch with elderly people in their community to carry out basic DIY and also help with minor chores including changing lightbulbs and moving furniture. These are jobs for people which are too small to call a trade’s person, but too much to do themselves.
Volunteers should have a friendly demeanour, access to transport and a toolkit, basic DIY skills and willing to give a little of their time free of charge.
A spokesperson for the scheme said “Care and Repair does small DIY jobs, free of charge, for older people to help them maintain their homes and their independence. As we age even minor home repairs such as hanging a picture or changing a lightbulb can become challenging.”
Volunteers complete an application form after which Age Action Care organise Garda vetting and on line training. will be organised for suitable volunteers.
In order to provide the service Age Action Care works with local community groups. They train them to run the Care and Repair service with the support of Age Action staff. The community group then becomes a partner of Age Action.
