Local TikTok star Serena Terry visited the North West Regional College Media Department this week.
Terry, better known as Mammy Banter, was visiting as part of a collaboration between the NWRC Media Department and the Tuned In Project, a group helping adults with learning disabilities through creative and digital media.
Students from the Media Department and young people from the TIP collaborated to film The Wan Show – their answer to BBC’s The One Show.
“This is the second year we have collaborated with TIP. It is a great opportunity for students of both NWRC and TIP to work together creatively to produce an amazing, funny and heartwarming TV studio production!” said event co-ordinator and lecturer at NWRC Michael Timoney.
“I can’t wait for the final Christmas special to be released on TIP socials and for everyone to see the production.”
Timoney oversaw the filming of the Wan Show in the college’s new £100,000 TV studio.
The show featured Terry as a guest. Her comedic videos depicting the tribulations of motherhood and teenage children became a viral sensation during the Covid pandemic. She has since written popular books based on the videos and appeared in the final season of Derry Girls.
“I wanted to come down and see all the amazing work that the students are doing at the minute,” said Serena Terry. “I’m blown away by that studio…it’s unbelievable.”
“I wish that I had these facilities…for me, I’m a one woman band whose doing it on a very small scale at a lot lower quality.”
She encouraged young people looking to work in media.
“Embrace it with open arms, realise how lucky you are, continue on building your craft and honing your craft.”
Sean Curran of the Tuned In Project added, “At the Tuned in Project we use the digital and creative arts, media and music to support people with Learning Disabilities to be different.
“My students like to focus on comedy for their projects and The Wan Show was born out of wanting to do a parody on The One Show, as a Christmas Special. I polled the students on who the special guest would be and Mammy Banter won by a mile. I got in touch with Serena and she was more than happy to get involved as the special guest.”
“The video will be going out on our social media this week for everyone to enjoy. I believe it showcases that there are no barriers to our student’s talents and I love being able to help bring their ideas and talents to the world.
“One of the presenters, Charlie, wanted to add that he found the experience ‘Awesome’.”
