In a significant move toward fostering inclusivity and accessibility, the Donegal County Library Service has introduced C-Pen Readers, now available for borrowing at local library branches. This initiative aims to facilitate independent reading for individuals facing challenges such as dyslexia, aphasia, visual impairments, and those learning a new language.
The C-Pen Reader, a portable and pocket-sized device, utilizes a natural speaking voice to scan and read text aloud, promoting active independent reading and comprehension. With a built-in dictionary, users can easily access word meanings on the go. An internet-free and WiFi-independent tool, the C-Pen Reader can be used anytime and anywhere, making it a versatile resource for a diverse range of readers.
Donna Cavanagh, Senior Executive Librarian for Donegal County Library Service, expressed the library’s dedication to promoting literacy and inclusivity. She stated, “Helping people to read is at the heart of what we do, and by making C-Pen Readers available to borrow for free from your local library, we hope to make reading more accessible to everyone. Whether you are a student struggling with reading assignments, an adult learning to read, or someone with a visual impairment, the C-Pen Reader can help.”
Funding for this valuable resource comes through the Dormant Accounts Fund for Library Supports for Marginalized, Socially Excluded, and Disadvantaged Communities. This financial support enables the library to cater to the needs of various groups, including older individuals, children from disadvantaged communities, people with disabilities, and other marginalized populations within Donegal.
Members of the public interested in utilizing the C-Pen Reader can borrow the device for a period of three weeks, free of charge. Obtaining a library card is a simple process, available at no cost. To join, individuals can either visit their local library branch with some identification or register online at www.donegallibrary.ie.
Residents are encouraged to explore the opportunities that the C-Pen Reader presents at their local Donegal Library branch, contributing to a more inclusive and accessible reading experience for the entire community.
