MAYOR of Derry and Strabane Councillor Sandra Duffy has expressed her concern at reports of cuts at Radio Foyle with the axing of its breakfast show and unconfirmed reports of eight job losses.
Speaking to NWRC journalism students Luke McCallion, Dylan Johnston and Callum McGuigan Mayor Duffy described Radio Foyle as a really valuable outlet for voices in the North West and said she would be particularly concerned about any job losses.
“In terms of the BBC, it’s paid for by the licence payer and licence payers expect to hear news from their local area. They expect to hear local voices. To have things centralised to Belfast is another blow to the North West. It feels like it’s forgotten about in these conversations,” she said.
In a wide ranging interview with students, Cllr Duffy said the biggest issue she was meeting on the doorsteps was the cost of living crisis. This is turn was having a massive impact on people’s mental health particularly in the run up to Christmas, she said.
The Mayor said efforts were continuing to secure a flight between Derry and Dublin to improve infrastructural links between the North West and the Irish capital city.
