Derry is in for a treat this Halloween with major investment in local talent to mark the city’s 40th Year of celebrations.
Preparations are underway with the announcement of a new investment for the city’s artists and a new Artistic Director for the Halloween Carnival Parade.
The Derry Halloween Parade, recognised internationally, is set to return and be the most ambitious display in the events history. With bigger plans and funding, the parade is set to bring hundreds of new artists, community groups and musicians together for the festivities.
Kevin O’Neill has been appointed new Artistic Director for the milestone parade. Mr O’Neill has 30 years experience and previously leading the 2013 parade for UK City of Culture. He said this year’s parade will blend the nostalgia of Derry Halloween and rich mythology.
Mr O’Neill said, “This year’s parade will celebrate 40 years of Derry Halloween by looking back at some of the unforgettable sights and sounds of the 1980s, with sections inspired by the fashion, music and atmosphere of that iconic decade.
“Alongside the birthday celebrations, audiences can also expect to journey much further back in time, exploring the rich Celtic traditions of Samhain and encountering the shape-shifting creatures that feature in our myths and legends. This is such an important part of the festival, which has a strong focus on the folklore and traditions that have shaped our event today.”
Derry City Councils’ Head of Culture, Jacqueline Whoriskey, said this special 40th celebration would celebrate all things past and future.
Ms Whoriskey said this parade would showcase Derry’s proud heritage and look forward to the future for the festivities.
“Derry Halloween has evolved over four decades into one of the world’s leading Halloween festivals, attracting visitors from across Ireland and beyond while showcasing the creativity, talent and community spirit that defines the city and wider region.
