There have been more than 300 excess deaths due to Covid in Derry and Strabane since the pandemic began. The figures are contained in a new report published by the NI Statistics Research Agency.

Across Northern Ireland, there was an estimated total of 4,075 excess deaths between March 2020 and September 2022, which was 9.0 per cent above expected levels. Excess deaths are the difference between the expected number of deaths in a period of time based on the previous five years, and the actual number of deaths in the same period.

According to the report, “Limavady District Electoral Area (21.8 per cent) in Causeway Coast & Glens Local Government District had the highest relative excess deaths.

“Ballyclare DEA (21.7 per cent) and Three Mile Water DEA (21.2 per cent) in Antrim & Newtownabbey LGD, as well as Sperrin (20.6 per cent) in Derry City & Strabane LGD had also relative excess deaths greater than 20 per cent.”

The number of excess deaths in Derry & Strabane accounted for 7.7 per cent of excess deaths in the North.

The total number of deaths caused by Covid in this period was 4,028. The overall number of excess deaths included deaths by other causes. This included notable increases of over 25 per cent in deaths caused by diabetes and 16 per cent by problems with the digestive system.
