Sony has received the Guinness world record for the best-selling console brand. It sold 450 million units sold across its four consoles.
Now, 25 years since the initial debut, the original Playstation has gone on to sell more than 100 million units globally. The first ever home console to do this.
Playstation CEO Jim Ryan said in a blog post: “We struck a chord with the gaming community because PlayStation offered experiences beyond what anyone could ever imagine was possible with a home console.
“ From the very start, we opened our arms to developers, providing them with the tools and technology to create beautiful, expansive worlds, and to experiment with new ideas.”
He talked about how in the past they wanted to ensure that the Playstation community was inclusive. Not just for someone in the US, UK or Japan.
With its history playstation has now spanned multiple generations, not just of consoles but of people.
“It’s truly humbling to see fans who grew up on PlayStation passing down their love of gaming to their children, who are now playing on PS4.” said Mr Ryan.
The idea of the system was conceived before the 16-bit era when Nintendo and Sega were giants in the home console industry.
Nintendo wanted to experiment with the CD-ROM format but encountered a few problems. In the end they turned to Sony who, along with Phillips, had created the format. It was originally conceived as a disk-add on to Nintendo’s Super Nintendo system dubbed the SNES-CD.
This project was cancelled after the former president of Nintendo Hiroshi Yamuchi was unhappy with Sony solely handling all games released on the console. Nintendo instead decided to partner with Phillips to bring Nintendo titles to their console: the CD-i.
Sony considered abandoning the project. But instead decided to take what they had learned and apply it to building their own console, the original Playstation.
On December 3, 1994 the first Playstation made its global debut in Japan. Then released in both Europe and the United States in September of 1995.
The original PS played host to classics such as Metal Gear Solid and Crash Bandicoot.
But the real gem in Sony’s crown came from the Playstation 2. Considered the best console of all time by many and still holding the title of the best selling console ever (155 million units sold).
The most recent iteration of the Playstation, the PS4, is the second best selling home console of all time (102.8 million units sold).
