Fast Thursday is a band started in 2016 and has been going from strength to strength.
Recently the three-piece went on a tour of the UK and has played up and down the Island of Ireland. The band consists of NWRC students Reese Nelson on guitar and vocals, Jamie Mc Clelland on bass and backing vocals and Luke Sharkey on drums.
They recently made it to the finals of the battle of the bands in Derry.
Started in 2016 the band has multiple singles and two EPs, Streetwalker and Unite the Factions. They are currently working on their first album and another single. The single should be out around Valentine’s Day and the album is expected to be finished for late 2020.
Frontman Reese Nelson said the first time he realised the success of the band was at the monthly Disturbance event in Letterkenny.
“There was people singing our tunes and that was weird, I had never seen that before, up until that point. When you write a song it;s obviously personal to yourself, but you never think someone else will be singing it back. Because obviously enough they’re taking in a different way to what I am.”
The band realised that they were making music that people were enjoying and wanted to sing and dance to.
“Our songs have always been about people. I love really interesting people and really weird people.”
Reese said that those involved in the Music and Performing Arts (MAPA) department at NWRC have provided amazing support. Such as advising the band on things like contracts and helping to produce songs.
Fast Thursday’s biggest achievement yet may be their tour in Britain. The Frontman called the music scene there as ‘completely different’ compared to what is in Northern Ireland.
“The way I would say it is you would play in a bar with live music, whereas over there it’s a venue built for live music, but they put a bar in it.”
Reese would love to see something more like this come to Derry. He said that there is enough interest in Derry to support such a venue and it would be great for bands in the area.
Fast Thursday’s next concert will be in the Nerve Centre on December 21. They will play along with Charity Shop Vinyl, Sugarwolf and Cherym.
